POTD - Volvo P1800 Rally car

This 1963 Volvo P1800 was campaigned by LFT racing in Swedish rallies.  Looks pretty cool in the snow.

POTD - Peter Sellers with Ferrari 275 GTB

Peter Sellers was something of a petrolhead.  One time, in the middle of the night, Sellers turned up at Spike Milligan's house.  Sellers told Milligan there was a rattle coming from the boot of his Rolls Royce.  So Milligan was given a torch and shut in the boot whilst Sellers drove around the block.

The car was stopped by a policeman, who heard noises coming from the boot whilst he was taking to Sellers.  When he opened the boot lid and saw Milligan, in his pyjamas, holding a torch, the policeman merely said, "Oh.  It's you."

This is Peter Sellers with a Ferrari 275 GTB which, presumably, didn't have a squeaky boot.

POTD - A dented Aston Martin DB6 (and a Rolling Stone)

This Aston Martin DB6, photographed in 1966, belonged to one of the Monkees.  The repair bill came to £200.  Mick Jagger doesn't look too chuffed to be photographed.

Thanks to @andysb1970 for the photo

POTD - An upside down XK120

The last thing you would want, when racing a Jaguar XK120, is to roll the car.  With no crash protection the drivers only chance of survival is to be thrown from the car.  Given the absence of an ambulance in this photo hopefully the driver escaped.

Many thanks to @andysb1970 for the photo.

POTD - Sauber C32

This is the Sauber C32, the Swiss team's 2013 charger.  The C32 is one of the prettiest F1 cars released so far this year, and features a smoothed nose section and comparatively small sidepods.

POTD - Lotus E21

This is Lotus' F1 charger for the 2013 season - the E21.  The car retains the stepped nose, although it is more subtly blended than last year's car.

POTD - Ferrari F138

This is the Ferrari F138, Ferrari's 2013 F1 car.  Pinstripes and a black lower band have been introduced.  The 8 in F138 is named for the V8 engines, which see their final appearance in 2013.

POTD - Red Bull RB9

This is the Red Bull RB9, their 2013 F1 car.  Infiniti's title sponsorship means more, and bigger, branding.  The RB9 gets a duck's nose, but it's subtly blended into the bodywork.

POTD - McLaren MP4-28

This is the McLaren F1 car for the 2013 season - the MP4-28.  The car retains it's smooth nose and ultra-low sidepods.  A lot is also expected of Lewis Hamilton's replacement, Sergio Perez.

POTD - Kimi Raikkonen's steering wheel

Lotus F1 team released this photo just after the launch of the E21.  The team have obviously decided to embrace Kimi's style rather than stifle it.

Our favourite - OPEN GATE.  Very subtle.

POTD - Pushing the envelope

The driver of this Renault 5 seems to have hit that kerb at the wrong angle.  We don't know what happened next, or what corner it is - although with such a high kerb it could be the Nürburgring.

Top marks to anyone who can identify the corner.

Many thanks to @andysb1970 for the photo

POTD - Escort Mexico advert

This is an original advert for the Mk1 Escort Mexico, which talks of 0-60mph in 10.7 seconds and making "...so called sports cars look extremely daft."  How times change.

Many thanks to @andysb1970 for the photo

POTD - Peugeot Talbot Dealership - 1982

This is Birtwistles Garage, Chester Road, Hartford, Cheshire taken in 1982.  The dealership no longer exists and on the site now stands an MoT station.

What cars can you spot in the photo?

Picture Of The Day - Mercedes W125 doing 268mph

On 28 January 1938, the Mercedes-Benz W125 record-breaking car set a world speed record on a public road which still stands to this day - a speed of 432.7 km/h (268.9mph) was achieved by Rudolf Caracciola.

Picture Of The Day - Rallying Escort

Nothing stirs a true petrolhead more than a Mk1 or Mk2 Ford Escort in action.  Lightweight, rear wheel drive, frequently rallied.

This one is being driven by Tim Gibbs in the 1978 New Zealand Rally.  The car had previously been campaigned by Hannu Mikkola in the 1974 RAC Rally.

Picture Of The Day - Homemade Porsche 911

This strange looking 911 is made from cardboard, tape and lightweight tubing, all atop a four wheeled bicycle.  Have a look at the photos below for what lies underneath the 'bodywork'.

It's not a bad job really but one would have to question why.

Picture Of The Day - BMW in the snow

This photo was taken by Jon Bradbury of his BMW 323i on a typical snowy day in the UK - with the hood down.  Brave, brave man.

Many thanks to Jon for the image.  You can find this and more on his personal website www.jonbradbury.com

Picture Of The Day - Bump starting a McLaren F1

This isn't any McLaren F1.  It's the original prototype, number XP1, and the factory had stayed open all weekend to get it finished.  Here, it is bump started by the team to fire it up for the first time ever.

The man in the background is the F1's creator, Gordon Murray.

Picture Of The Day - VW camper with a Chevy V8

So this is a VW camper that's been lowered as far as it can go, and has a Chevy V8 in the middle.  OK, nothing strange there.  Uber cool though - if that's what floats your boat.

Thanks to @andysb1970 for the photo

Picture Of The Day - Castrol TOM's Toyota Supra

This is the Castrol TOM's Toyota Supra, as raced by Michael Krumm and Pedro De La Rosa in the 1997 Japanese GT Championship, on it's way up the hill at Goodwood in 2007.

Thanks to @james_wright200 for the photo.
