Get Yourself In The Mood For The TT With This Short Film

This video is only two and a half minutes long but it sums up the Isle of Man TT beautifully. It was released in 2013 as part of ITV4's coverage.

I don't mind saying that it sends a shiver up my spine and (almost) a tear to my eye every time I watch it.  The TT races are the fastest, most dangerous and brutal form of racing in the world and the racers the bravest.

In a recent documentary Michael Dunlop said that footballers fall over on the pitch and cry for 3 months whereas his dad, Robert Dunlop who won 5 TTs, and uncle, Joey Dunlop who won 26 TTs, were real men and "machines".

Robert and Joey both died racing motorcycles.  Michael's right in one regard, TT racers are real men (and women, don't forget the ladies who race) but they aren't machines. They're only human and the Snaefell Mountain Course on which the TT races are run is the most dangerous race circuit in the world.

Here's hoping for a safe week's racing at the 2014 TT.

The Scariest On-Board Lap Of A Race Track You'll Ever See

This is on-board footage taken from Michael Dunlop's Honda CBR600RR at the 2013 Isle of Man TT.

This recently released footage shows the 37 mile TT course in its full glory, and puts all other forms of racing, on two wheels and four, to shame in terms of speed, bravery, skill and danger.

The Isle of Man TT races take place from 24 May to 6 June 2014.  Michael is one of the up and coming stars but seasoned veteran John McGuinness still has what it takes and has a factory Honda, can he match Joey Dunlop's total haul of 26 victories?

Beautiful short film sums up the Isle of Man TT

I saw this film as part of the ITV4 coverage of the 2013 Isle of Man TT.  My favourite song and my favourite sport put together in one film.  It sent a shiver up my spine when I saw it on the TV, and then it did again when I watched it just now.

Happily, now, we can watch this wonderful film again and again.

It's a whole year until TT 2014.  I hope it flies by.

John McGuinness admits to "farting and following through" before Senior TT

TT press conferences are always comedy gold.  This one after John McGuinness' win at the 2013 Senior TT wasn't quite as exuberant as some have been but it was full of brilliant nuggets...including John's admission as to what happened just before the race.

Here's John taking the ferry back to the mainland with the fans after the race.  Not something you'd see an F1 driver do

What do the locals think of the Isle of Man TT?

Dainese are releasing a trilogy of short films exploring the Isle of Man TT races.  This is the first, entitled The Island.

Michael Dunlop wins the 2013 Isle of Man TT Superbike race

Michael Dunlop is the first man to beat the legendary John McGuinness on a Superbike in an Isle of Man TT since 2003.  Michael, nephew of 26 time TT winner Joey Dunlop, has been coming to the island since 2007, and won the 2009 Supersport TT (for 600cc bikes) on only his 3rd year at the TT.

In 2011 he won the Superstock (for production 1 litre bikes) and in 2012 won the Supersport TT again.   Like all TT racers Michael's rise to the top has been through sheer talent, grit and without any major financial backers.  Indeed in the 2012 TT he was to be found scouring the paddock for parts for his engine after it blew in practice - he had no money for a spare.

The Honda TT Legends team picked him up for 2013 pitting him alongside 19 time winner John McGuinness.

The field was looking particularly strong for this year's TT with Dunlop and McGuinness in the TT Legends Honda team, Guy Martin on the Tyco Suzuki, Cameron Donald on the Wilson Craig Honda, Michael Rutter also on a TT Legends Honda, Bruce Anstey on a HM Plant Honda, Conor Cummins on a Milwaukee Yamaha Superbike, Gary Johnson on a Lincs Lifting Ltd Honda and Josh Brookes making his debut at the TT on a Tyco Suzuki.

Michael Dunlop was in the lead after the first lap of the 37.75 mile Mountain course, with Guy Martin 3.2 seconds behind and Gary Johnson in third place.  Johnson ran out of fuel at the end of the second lap and John McGuinness had increased his pace so the order was Dunlop, McGuinness, Martin.

Michael Dunlop was visibly fastest.  He was riding the TT course like a short circuit, taking kerbs and brushing walls as he kept the hammer down.

The race was six laps and Superbikes can only run two laps worth of fuel so it was pit stop time again at the end of the fourth lap.  John McGuinness was 30 seconds down on Dunlop but exceed the 60kph pit speed limit by 17kmh - and was given a minute penalty.

The order after four laps was Dunlop, Martin, McGuinness.

The last two laps saw blistering speed from John McGuinness and Australian Cameron Donald.  McGuinness set the fastest ever lap of the TT - an average of 131.671mph - to overhaul Guy Martin but Cam Donald really motored to overtake both Martin and McGuinness.

The finishing order was Michael Dunlop, Cameron Donald and John McGuinness.  Thirty years since Joey Dunlop first won for Honda at the TT his nephew Michael and his old team mate John McGuinness stood on the podium.  With Cam Donald's second place Honda achieved a 1-2-3 at the 2013 Superbike race.

The Isle of Man TT never fails to excite and with what looks like a sunny week ahead we can look forward to some more spectacular, and hopefully safe, racing for the rest of the week - culminating in the Senior TT on Friday 7 June.

Will we see a new era of Dunlop domination now that Michael has a sorted bike supplied by a well financed team?  His performance today suggests we might.  And will Guy Martin ever win a TT race?  Hopefully - he deserves it.  He's had a lower profile this year but the continued pressure to perform and achieve that first win seems to be his achilles heal.

You can find the entire TT race and TV schedule here and the full results of Sunday's Superbike race here.

Honda TT Legends - 5 man superteam for 2013

The 2013 Isle of Man TT race is already set to be a classic with the news that Honda TT Legends have retained John McGuinness and signed Michael Dunlop and Michael Rutter.

Motorcycle racing is a thrilling and dangerous sport, loved by millions of bikers around the world, and the Isle of Man TT race is the pinnacle of motorcycling danger and thrills.  So dangerous is the race that MotoGP dropped it as an event in 1977 and most top level bikers, and even F1 drivers, admire the race and the riders as spectators.

Lap records around the 39.4 mile course are measured as average speed.  The current record holder is John McGuinness and his average time around the course is 131.578mph.  The course itself isn't a race track as such.  It consists of town and village streets and country lanes.  It isn't lined with armco and gravel traps but with lampposts, stone walls, trees and ravines.

Since 1977 the event, held annually on the Isle of Man, has held it's own as a standalone race.  The centenary race was held in 2007 and visitor numbers for the event have been growing year on year.  The racers in the TT are a particular breed of insanely talented and just insane motorcyclists, most of whom race on a tiny budget.  However, some fully funded, professional race teams do exist and the top one at the moment is Honda TT Legends.

The TT has produced some outright stars over the past few years.  John McGuinness is one such name.  John has won 19 TTs and is the most successful TT racer alive.  Since 2011 he has raced for the Honda TT Legends team and has signed to race for them in 2013.

The late Joey Dunlop, who won 26 TTs, is a legendary name in motorcycle circles and his nephew Michael Dunlop has already won 3 TTs as an independent.  In the 2011 TT races Michael crashed his bike in practice and had to beg other teams for spare parts to fix it.  Michael is a racer of extraordinary talent who many see as the successor to his uncle Joey.  Michael's reputation as a racer was sealed in 2008 when his father, Robert, died during a practice session for the NW200 race.  Michael didn't withdraw from the event and the next day won the 250cc race.  Michael Dunlop will race for Honda TT Legends in 2012 - his first time as part of a professional race team.

Michael Rutter is an English bike racer who has a long and varied racing CV.  Michael has won the NW200 road race 12 times, the TT once, the Macau GP 10 times and has competed in BSB and MotoGP.

With McGuinness, Rutter and Dunlop already in the bag for the TT, Honda TT Legends also compete in the Endurance World Championship - a series of 3 8 hour races at Bol D'Or in France, Suzuka in Japan and Oscherleben in Germany with a 24 hour finale held at Le Mans, France.

The riders racing for Honda TT Legends in the EWC are Cameron Donald (who has 2 TT wins under his belt) and Simon Andrews (who has been competing in BSB since 2009).

With Rutter and Dunlop alongside McGuinness in the same team the 2013 Isle of Man TT looks set to be an extraordinary race.  We're looking forward to it already.
