Can you outdrive a tornado?

This bloke did.  Daniel Clarke and his passenger stopped in the road as they were driving from Mulwala, NSW, Australia when they saw a tornado ahead.

As the tornado approaches Daniel reverses at full speed, pulls a J-turn and races the twister.  It's pretty dramatic stuff.

Watching the clip does beg one question.  Why didn't he just drive to where the tornado had just been rather than where it was going?
