2013 Audi RS6 - specs, photos and price

Audi have just announced details of the new RS6, which goes back to the future and features a twin-turbo V8.  The last, V10, RS6 was sold until 2010 whereafter fast Audi estate fans had to make do with the 420bhp S6 or 450bhp RS4.

The new RS6's headline stats are 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds, 560bhp, top speed of 178mph, 28.8 mpg - all from a 4 litre twin-turbo V8.

The mpg is possible due to the new engine's COD (Cylinder On Demand) system.  At low to intermediate loads and engine speeds, it shuts down the intake and exhaust valves of cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8. The 4.0-litre V8 then runs on four-cylinders until the driver accelerates more forcibly again. Efficiency in the active cylinders is increased because the operating points are displaced toward higher loads. (That last sentence came direct from Audi - can you tell?)

The gearbox is an 8 speed semi-automatic that operates either as a full automatic or manual, using the steering wheel mounted paddles.  Obviously the RS6 has four wheel drive via Audi's Quattro system, which has a locking central differential and an active rear differential to prevent slip.

The RS6 is the first RS model to get active air suspension which allows for controlled damping that can be altered by the driver selecting one of several different settings.  Ride height is 20mm lower than standard A6s.  Alternatively, customers can specify standard springs and (three way adjustable) shock absorbers if they wish.

The new RS6 weighs 100kg less than the previous model though increased use of aluminium in the body, although high strength steel has been used in some areas to increase strength and rigidity.

The car will come with several RS6 specific features including aluminium and piano black trim (as in the Jaguar XFR), sports seats, a gear/revs shift light system (as in the Triumph Street Triple motorcycle), tyre pressure sensors, RS driver information system and a BOSE sound system with integrated satnav.  External features include new wings, grille, bumpers, sill flares, rear spoiler and diffuser.

The new Audi RS6 will be priced at approximately £77,000 and will be available in early 2013.
